Teachable Moments with Dr. ABC : A Spoonful for the Journey

Description

This book is a collection of my writings made on my Facebook page. It is a collection of my honest reflections as I journey from day to day. I chose to name this volume, "A Spoonful for the Journey," as I believe that in life we all need a little bit more of something to take us to where we are going. That spoonful for some may be inspiration, motivation, or confrontation. For others, it is reflection, revival or restoration. For others, it is a rebuke, reproof or a strong reminder. Whatever it is that you need, I believe that these reflections will offer each of you something special on your journey. So come journey with me!

This 64-page booklet features forty scriptures of promise and purpose and corresponding inspirational passages to encourage those facing everyday battles. Ideal for daily reading, each segment includes a reminder that even in difficult times, God fights for his people. It includes passages from Glory Days, You'll Get Through This, For the Tough Times, and other previously published favorites by New York Timesbestselling author Max Lucado. The small trim and low price point make this booklet easy to share with friends and family who are focused on Teachers Versus Technocrats ebook pdf their battles and missing out on the Promised Land life now. We're in the middle of an epidemic of average. So-called "normal" people get up every day, go to work, do what's asked of them, leave promptly at 5, and return home to sit on the couch and watch TV. Society tells us that this is what it means to lead a balanced life. Don't stress too much or work too hard. Your career isn't everything. But Grant Cardone thinks this preoccupation with balance has really just given an excuse to be mediocre.

Teachers Versus Technocrats

Description

Harry F. Wolcott draws on his dual perspective as an educator and an anthropologist to provide a unique and penetrating look at the dynamics of a federally funded research and development project and to analyze what happened when university researchers and school district administrators attempted to introduce an experimental planning and evaluation system in an operating school district.

Fast Solar Sailing : Astrodynamics of Special Sailcraft Trajectories

Description

The range of solar sailing is very vast; it is a fully in-space means of propulsion that should allow us to accomplish various mission classes that are literally impossible using rocket propulsion, no matter if nuclear or electric. Fast and very fast solar sailings are special classes of sailcraft missions, initially developed only in the first half of the 1990s and still evolving, especially after the latest advances in nanotechnology. This book describes how to plan, compute and optimize the trajectories of sailcraft with speeds considerably higher than 100 km/s; such sailcraft would be able to explore the outer heliosphere, the near interstellar medium and the solar gravitational lens (550-800 astronomical units) in times significantly shorter than the span of an average career (~ 35 years), just to cite a few examples. The scientific interest in this type of exploration is huge.

A stunning new translation of the classic tale of Greeks, Trojans and the fall of Troy; An ILIAD for the 21st century. Man seduces another's wife then kidnaps her. The husband and his brother get a gang together to steal her back and take revenge. The woman regrets being seduced and wants to escape whilst the man's entourage resent the position they have been placed in. Yet the battle lines have been drawn and there is no going back...Not the plot of the latest Hollywood thriller, but the basis of The Iliad - the Greek classic that details the war between the Greeks and Historical Atlas of Colorado pdf the Trojans after the kidnapping of Helen of Sparta. Based on the recent, superb M.L. West edition of the Greek, this Iliad is more readable and moving than any previous version. Thanks to the scholarship and poetic power of the highly acclaimed Stephen Mitchell, this new translation recreates the energy and simplicity, the speed, grace, and continual thrust and pull of the original, while the Iliad's ancient story bursts vividly into life.

Historical Atlas of Colorado download book

Thomas J. Noel,Paul F. Mahoney,Richard E. Stevens: Historical Atlas of Colorado

Historical Atlas of Colorado

Description

This unique historical atlas will help you to comprehend quickly Colorado's geography and its fascinating past - from the pre-historic Indian cultures to the modern metropolises, from the Spanish and French explorers to the modern ski resorts. The full-page, clearly drawn maps and the lively text provide easy access to the essential information about the Highest State. Colorado's history has been played out on a spectacular landscape. The highest mountains of the continental divide cut the state in half with a two-mile-high barrier. This rocky obstacle long served as a tribal and international boundary and as an impediment to exploration and settlement. All that changed in 1858 when gold was discovered on the South Platte River. Within two years, 100,000 people rushed to Colorado, the home of instant cities and instant millionaires. Quickly, the state evolved from a most rugged and remote frontier into a booming mining and agricultural center. Compiled by three leading authorities on Colorado history and geography, this atlas is designed for both students and tourists. Scholars will profit from the maps of little-known phenomena such as the earliest county lines and the explorers' routes. Weekend tourists will learn to follow old wagon trails, stagecoach lines, and narrow-gauge railroads to ghost towns, historic districts, literary landmarks, quaint bed-and-breakfasts, and other attractions. For easy use, the atlas is well organized into sections on geography, political boundaries, mining, transportation, settlement and urbanization, and recreational and historic areas. The extensive references for each of the sixty maps are a gold mine of detailed and esoteric literature. No Coloradotraveler, whether in an armchair or hiking the back country, should be without the Historical Atlas of Colorado.

Sir Peter Cook: Drawing: The Motive Force of Architecture

Drawing: The Motive Force of Architecture

Description

Focusing on the creative and inventive significance of drawing for architecture, this book by one of its greatest proponents, Peter Cook, is an established classic. It exudes Cook's delight and catholic appetite for the architectural. Readers are provided with perceptive insights at every turn. The book features some of the greatest and most intriguing drawings by architects, ranging from Frank Lloyd Wright, Heath-Robinson, Le Corbusier, and Otto Wagner to Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Arata Isozaki, Eric Owen Moss, Bernard Tschumi, and Lebbeus Woods; as well as key works by Cook and other members of the original Archigram group. For this new edition, Cook provides a substantial new chapter that charts the speed at which the trajectory of drawing is moving. It reflects the increasing sophistication of available software and also the ways in which 'hand drawing' and the 'digital' are being eclipsed by new hybrids injecting a new momentum to drawing. These 'crossovers' provide a whole new territory as attempts are made to release drawing from the boundaries of a solitary moment, a single-viewing position, or a single referential language. Featuring the likes of Toyo Ito, Perry Culper, Izaskun Chinchilla, Kenny Tsui, Ali Rahim, John Berglund, and Lorene Faure, it leads to fascinating insights into the effect that medium has upon intention and definition of an idea or a place. Is a pencil drawing more attuned to a certain architecture than an ink drawing, or is a particular colour evocative of a certain atmosphere? In a world where a Mayer drawing is creatively contributing something different from a Rhino drawing, there is much to demand of future techniques.

The book builds upon the author's previous theoretical writings and will be of great interest to those who have followed his work through the years. However, this book covers issues the author has not previously analyzed and extends the scope of his work into areas of pressing practical concern. At a time of corrosive popular cynicism and profound international unease, the need for clarity over the fundamental concepts of politics has never been greater. The forces of Terrorism and Fundamentalism endanger our Security, while government responses to Drawing: The Motive Force of Architecture download book it pose a basic threat to Liberty, Democracy and Human rights. Corruption, Spin and a suspect Political culture arouse public indignation, which is further aggravated by an array of Pressure groups and the far-from-disinterested attentions of the Mass media. In 50 Political Ideas You Really Need to Know, Ben Dupr clears away the murk that obscures key concepts that we ignore at our peril.

from bestselling author Anne McCaffrey listeners learn how to "train the brain" to reduce stress, anxiety, chronic pain, and more In laughably minuscule press runs by today s standards, T & G was made by guys within the Midwest scene strictly for the edification of scenesters and pals in other cities like DC, Philly, Boston, LA, SF, Chicago, et al. Inspired by magazines such as Slash and Search and Destroy and writers like Claude Bessy and Chris Desjardines, TV and DS pumped out seventeen naughty, irreverent issues together, and TV did another five solo. The Grammar 3 Handbook: In Precursive Letters (BE) download book why owls were feared in the ancient world - A Wicked Web featuring allies and enemies Winner of the Elizabeth Longford prize for Historical Biography Mark Bostridge's Florence Nightingale is a masterful and effortlessly enjoyable biography of one of Britain's most iconic heroines. Whether honoured and admired or criticized and ridiculed, Florence Nightingale has invariably been misrepresented and misunderstood. As the Lady with the Lamp, ministering to the wounded and dying of the Crimean War, she offers an enduring image of sentimental appeal and one that is permanently lodged in our national consciousness. But the awesome scale of her achievements over the course of her 90 years is infinitely more troubling - and inspiring - than this mythical simplification. From her tireless campaigning and staggering intellectual abilities to her tortured relationship with her sister and her distressing medical condition, this vivid and immensely readable biography draws on a wealth of unpublished material and previously unseen family papers, disentangling the myth from the reality and reinvigorating with new life one of the most iconic figures in modern British history.

Josef Koudelka: Exiles

Description

About "Exiles," Cornell Capa once wrote, "Koudelka's unsentimental, stark, brooding, intensely human imagery reflects his own spirit, the very essence of an exile who is at home wherever his wandering body finds haven in the night. " In this newly revised and expanded edition of the 1988 classic, which includes ten new images and a new commentary with Robert Delpire, Koudelka's work once more forms a powerful document of the spiritual and physical state of exile. The sense of private mystery that fills these photographs--mostly taken during Koudelka's many years of wandering through Europe and Great Britain since leaving his native Czechoslovakia in 1968--speaks of passion and reserve, of his rage to see. Solitary, moving, deeply felt and strangely disturbing, the images in "Exiles" suggest alienation, disconnection and love. "Exiles" evokes some of the most compelling and troubling themes of the twentieth century, while resonating with equal force in this current moment of profound migrations and transience. Josef Koudelka (born 1938) has published ten books of photographs, many of which focus on the relationship between man and the landscape, including "Gypsies" (1975; revised and enlarged edition in 2011), "Exiles" (1988), "Black Triangle" (1994), "Invasion 68: Prague" (2008) and "Wall" (2013). Significant exhibitions of his work have been held at The Museum of Modern Art and the International Center of Photography, both in New York; Hayward Gallery, London; and Palais de Tokyo, Paris. Koudelka is the recipient of the Medal of Merit awarded by the Czech Republic (2002) and numerous other awards. In 2012, he was named Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. He is based in Paris and Prague.

American Notes: For General Circulation: For General Circulation download book

Charles Dickens,Patricia Ingham,Stephen Wall: American Notes: For General Circulation: For General Circulation

American Notes: For General Circulation: For General Circulation

Description

American Notes is a fascinating account of nineteenth-century America sketched with Charles Dickens's characteristic wit and charm. This Penguin Classics edition is edited with notes and an introduction by Patricia Ingham. When Charles Dickens set out for America in 1842 he was the most famous man of his day to travel there - curious about the revolutionary new civilization that had captured the English imagination. His frank and often humorous descriptions cover everything from his comically wretched sea voyage to his sheer astonishment at the magnificence of the Niagara Falls, while he also visited hospitals, prisons and law courts and found them exemplary. But Dickens's opinion of America as a land ruled by money, built on slavery, with a corrupt press and unsavoury manners, provoked a hostile reaction on both sides of the Atlantic. American Notes is an illuminating account of a great writer's revelatory encounter with the New World. In her introduction, Patricia Ingham examines the response the book received when it was published, and compares it with similar travel writings of the period and with Dickens's fiction, in particular Martin Chuzzlewit. This edition includes an updated chronology, appendices and notes. Charles Dickens is one of the best-loved novelists in the English language, whose 200th anniversary was celebrated in 2012. His most famous books, including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield and The Pickwick Papers, have been adapted for stage and screen and read by millions. If you enjoyed American Notes, you might like Dickens's Pictures from Italy, also available in Penguin Classics.

Stitch-and-glue Boatbuilding: How to Build Kayaks and Other Small Boats

Description

This is the definitive how-to manual for the most popular method of amateur boatbuilding. Stitch-and-glue boatbuilding may be the most popular method of amateur boatbuilding today. In this method the home builder cuts out marine plywood panels to prescribed shapes, then puts them together with wire stitches long enough to glue and seal the seams with epoxy. Once the epoxy cures, the stitches are removed, and the result is a handsome, strong, watertight boat. "Stitch-and-Glue Boatbuilding" lays out the basic building techniques; outlines the shortcuts and pitfalls; shows how to design your own boat or choose a plan to build from; how to select tools and materials; and how to paint, finish, and outfit the boat.

William Germano: From Dissertation to Book

From Dissertation to Book

Description

When a dissertation crosses my desk, I usually want to grab it by its metaphorical lapels and give it a good shake. "You know something!" I would say if it could hear me. "Now tell it to us in language we can understand!" Since its publication in 2005, From Dissertation to Book has helped thousands of young academic authors get their books beyond the thesis committee and into the hands of interested publishers and general readers. Now revised and updated to reflect the evolution of scholarly publishing, this edition includes a new chapter arguing that the future of academic writing is in the hands of young scholars who meet the broader expectations of readers rather than the narrow requirements of academic committees. At the heart of From Dissertation to Book is the idea that revising the dissertation is fundamentally a process of shifting its focus from the concerns of a narrow audience - a committee or advisors - to those of a broader scholarly audience that wants writing to be both informative and engaging. William Germano offers clear guidance on how to do this, with advice on such topics as rethinking the table of contents, taming runaway footnotes, and confronting the limitations of jargon. Germano draws on his years of experience in both academia and publishing to show writers how to turn a dissertation into a book that an audience will actually enjoy, whether reading on a page or a screen. Germano also explores other, often overlooked, options for dissertations, such as journal articles or chapters in an edited work. With clear directions, engaging examples, and an eye for the idiosyncrasies of academic writing, From Dissertation to Book reveals to recent PhDs the secrets of careful and thoughtful revision - a skill that will be truly invaluable as they add "author" to their curriculum vitae.

Our Once and Future Planet: Restoring the World in the Climate Change Century

Description

The environmental movement is plagued by pessimism. And that's not unreasonable: with so many complicated, seemingly intractable problems facing the planet, coupled with a need to convince people of the dangers we face, it's hard not to focus on the negative. But that paints an unbalanced - and overly disheartening - picture of what's going on with environmental stewardship today. There are success stories, and Our Once and Future Planet delivers a fascinating account of one of the most impressive areas of current environmental experimentation and innovation: ecological restoration. Veteran investigative reporter Paddy Woodworth has spent years traveling the globe and talking with people - scientists, politicians, and ordinary citizens - who are working on the front lines of the battle against environmental degradation. At sites ranging from Mexico to New Zealand and Chicago to Cape Town, Woodworth shows us the striking successes (and a few humbling failures) of groups that are attempting to use cutting-edge science to restore blighted, polluted, and otherwise troubled landscapes to states of ecological health-and, in some of the most controversial cases, to particular moments in historical time, before widespread human intervention. His firsthand field reports and interviews with participants reveal the promise, power, and limitations of restoration. Ecological restoration alone won't solve the myriad problems facing our environment. But Our Once and Future Planet demonstrates the role it can play, and the hope, inspiration, and new knowledge that can come from saving even one small patch of earth.
